WHY RITALIN SO CONTROVERSIAL?
No real tests to diagnose “having” A.D.H.D. – art of observation
(see diagnostic criteria)
Don’t know how it works – maybe we don’t know other things
about what long term consequences are.
Rates of usage in U.S.:
500% increase since 1990
90% of worldwide Ritalin usage is in U.S.
Michigan ranks 3rd in nation in usage / 56% higher than
Approximately 10% of boys on it (5-8% overall)
WHY? What sparked the rapid growth of cases diagnosed and drugs
prescribed since then?
Early 90’s government subsidies to families and schools for
The 1991, Dept. of Health and Human Services mandate that
teachers “actively seek to identify A.D.D. children and
refer them for treatment”. Coincidentally, this was
brought about through the lobbying efforts of C.H.A.D.D.
(Children and Adults with Attention Deficit). According
to Fred Baughman, Jr., M.D., of Applied Scholastic
International, C.H.A.D.D. is funded by Ciba-Geigy (now
Novartis) who also funded the National Institute of
Health studies supporting their data.
Psychiatrists have been broadening definitions and lowering
thresholds for diagnosis. Biopsychiatric approach
Heightened public awareness of ADHD and its treatments, a
general increase in acceptance of medication as a
treatment for ADHD, a lack of resources for alternative
Despite a warning on Ritalin package inserts against use in
preschoolers, and reports of higher rates of adverse
events in this age group, over 50,000 prescriptions were
written for preschoolers in 1998, including two-year-old
children. This is especially disturbing because ADHD
criteria of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention are
common daily behaviors of most preschool-aged-children.

barking sounds and screaming obscenities)
Some scientific research stating low rates of side effects.
Who’s funding the research? Pharmaceutical companies?

Possibly a clear warning signal that something is out of balance
in our culture.
CULTURAL / LIFESTYLE ISSUES
Causes of ADHD-like symptoms (See attached)
Stuck in old model of “treating” sickness and disease vs. “creating”
health and wellness.
“Medicine cabinet” society – Those we trust most give us medicine
for temporary relief of pain and problems.
Wellness is sweeping the country – Dr. Eisenberg’s study.
Rude awakening! “Health” care costs, including medication, will
double in the next ten years! What steps are you taking now to
maximize your true health in the future? How needy will you be
of sickness and disease care services? How will you pay for
treatment when you and your employer can’t afford health
Chiropractic leading the way in wellness.
Wellness does not manifest by luck or chance. Nobody can give it to
you and you can’t buy it. It takes conscious choice to create
a wellness lifestyle.
Old English “hale” meaning “whole” – unified, interconnected,
Webster’s: A condition of wholeness in which all organs
function 100% all the time.
What is it that integrates and maintains balance?
Your inborn, innate intelligence.
ADAPTING TO LIFE
Life is the expression of intelligence through matter.
Perfection as long as no interference. Interference leads to
decreased expression and inability to adapt.
Within greater context of above cultural/lifestyle issues.
Adaptation guided and directed by Innate Intelligence.

OVERVIEW OF ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS
Lifestyle Coaching / Counseling
Optometric treatment / Vision therapy
CHIROPRACTIC?S ROLE IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Not just back/neck pain – mechanistic vs. wellness chiropractic.
Confusion arising out of our own profession
Proper alignment / posture necessary preventing interference
Movement effects brain development
Dynamic, plastic changes regulated by sensory input from
See and hear with the brain – processess information from
eyes/ears. Therefore, improving potential of brain
increases potential to process visual and auditory
Vertebral Subluxation Complexes (VSC) = Interference to proper nerve
regulation of body functions and adaptation processes.

Causes of subluxations – Physical, chemical, emotional stressors
Dr. Towbin’s research
Inter-uterine constraint – why mom needs to be
Childhood falls, accidents.
Structural imbalances/Posture – negatively effect sensory
input to the brain altering “neural image” (perception of self)
with resultant impacts on function and health. Like a computer,
garbage in, garbage out.
“Static on lines” – Effects concentration, impulsivity, &
body’s control of itself.
Balanced production and modulation of biochemistry and
neuroeptides. Rebalance brain chemistry & improves internal
control of the body.
In 1980-83, New York City schools instituted dietary
reforms that resulted in moving from 11% below the mean
national academic performance average to 5% above.
Dietary considerations ? see attached.
Toxins – air, water, food (pesticide & herbicide residuals),
Stress, fumes, vaccinations, etc.
Family, school, & social stress
Fast paced lives
Inappropriate parenting skills / Negative reinforcement.
REMOVING INTERFERENCE TO YOUR CHILD’S OPTIMUM POTENTIAL
Interference to NS must be cleared for your body to work
right and for your mind to be clear
Be proactive. Educate yourself. Take control. Don’t be
intimidated. It’s your child!
Chiropractic care – Basic premise: Body works better if free of
No “static” on the lines – your child’s health depends on
Take steps to improve nutrition
Get checked for vision / hearing problems
Reduce/ eliminate chemical toxins
Examine teacher/child dynamics
Examine family dynamics
Behavioral techniques – Be proactive
Psychological “vitamins” – Encouragement, affection, attention,
praise, recognition, smiles, hugs, and other expressions of
approval and encouragement. Help build self esteem.
Teach internal control
Meditation / Prayer / Biofeedback
Devin Sullivan – seizure meds led to behavior probs. Chiropractic
resolved seizures, thus meds eliminated and behavior improved.

Excerpted from The ADD & ADHD Diet
By Rachel Bell and Dr. Howard Peiper
Eat as many raw foods and organic as possible.
Avoid all foods that provoke an allergic reaction.
Discovering what individual foods may be causing
your or your child’s problems, you can do an Elimination
Diet at home.
Common dietary allergens are: wheat, corn, rice, oat, peas,
soy, peanuts, milk, artificial colors, pure baker’s
chocolate, eggs, can sugar, chicken, beef, pork, tomato,
potato, orange, lettuce, broccoli, green beans, coffee,
cheese, and alcohol.
An individualized diet based on a cause and effect
investigation of person specific sensitivities. 50 to 70
percent of the American childhood population is
allergic to cow’s milk and diary products.
People with ADD/ADHD require protein snacks throughout the day. High quality green foods supplement can provide additional dietaryprotein. These supplements are convenient, as they can bequickly mixed into a special drink or ?shake?.
The nutritional value of any food depends upon its absorption in theintestinal tract.
Decrease nerve interference through chiropractic care.
Proper balance of micro-organisms/potential yeast over growth
“Food Combining” – when to eat certain foods and how.
Natural alternative to sugar is stevia powder or “raw” honey.
What not to Eat:
Simple carbohydrates (candy, white bread, cookies, donuts,
commercial snacks) should be avoided.
Avoid all foods with artificial additives, chemical dyes, and
Dr. Benjamin Feingold: This diet prohibits the intake of
synthetic (artificial) colors, flavors, and preservatives,
and all foods containing natural salicylates including:
Almonds, apples (also cider and cider vinegar), apricots
All berries, cherries, cloves, coffee, cucumbers and pickles, currants, grapes and raisins (also wine and wine vinegar), nectarines, peppers (bell and chilies), plums and prunes, tangerines, tea, tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant.
What is in your food that can play havoc in your body and
aggravate your symptoms? Over 2,000 additives are used inshelves and save manufactures money.
BHT/BHA- Used to stabilize fats in foods.
Artificial Colors – Approximately 95% of the synthetic
Colorings used in the U.S. are coal tar derivatives. Dyes are
stored by the body tissues for a long time and are difficult
Propylene Glycol- Used as a de-icing fluid for airplanes, this
chemical is added to food and skin products to maintain
texture and moisture as well as inhibiting bacteria growth in
the product. It inhibits the growth of “friendly” bacteria in
your intestines and decreases the amount of moisture in the
intestinal tract possibly leading to constipation.
Sodium Nitrite- Used in the curing of meats.
MSG – Flavor enhancer
Sweeteners – Especially Nutrasweet-(aspartame)- It has been
reported to cause recurrent headaches, mental aberrations,
seizures, suicidal tendencies, behavioral disorders, birth
defects, skin lesions and urinary bladder disturbances.
Insecticides and Pesticides- Fruits and vegetables that are
Most susceptible to contamination from pesticides, (in order
of highest risk of contamination), are: strawberries, bell
peppers, spinach, cherries, peaches, cantaloupe, celery,
apples, apricots, green beans, grapes, and cucumbers. Use
organic foods instead.
Supplements that we need:
Most people need trace minerals, digestive enzymes, and
essential fatty acids.
Trace Minerals: Trace mineral deficiencies can cause anxiety,
limited attention span, and short term memory problems.
Enzymes: Cooked food diet depletes the body’s natural enzymes.
Proteins cannot be utilized without enzymes, nor can vitamins
and minerals. Raw foods contain their own enzymes, but when we
cook the food we kill the enzymes.
Essential Fatty Acids: These cannot be make by the body, and
therefore, must be ingested as food. EFA’s aid transmission of
nerve impulses that are needed for normal brain functioning.
These essential oils are easily damaged by heat, light, and
oxygen. Essential fatty acids can be obtained from
supplemental sources. The best sources of these unprocessed
oils are: Organic flax seed meal, cold pressed flax seed oil,
borage oil, salmon oil, evening primrose oil, and black
currant oil. Fish, especially Cod and Salmon are excellent.
Avoid all hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Read
labels and stay away from foods containing these treated oils
(margarine, commercial cooking oil, most commercial snack and
